    Responsibilities

    The Postdoctoral Scholars Program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), California Institute of Technology invites applicants for a postdoctoral research position in carbon cycle sciences, especially in the area of carbon cycle science, atmosphere greenhouse gas flux inversion, trace gas transport, validation and evaluation of top-down flux inversion results.  Dr. Junjie Liu in the Carbon Cycle and Ecosystems group, will serve as JPL postdoctoral advisor to the selected candidate. The appointee will carry out research in collaboration with the JPL advisor, resulting in publications in the open literature.

     

    The coming decade will usher in a “golden era” of satellite carbon measurements from a number of space agencies creating a virtual constellation. In order to quantify the information provided by NASA satellites to this constellation, the successful applicant will perform Observing System Simulation Experiments at global and regional scales, develop innovative strategies to quantify uncertainty with independent observations, implement innovative diagnostic algorithms, and analyze results from satellite data. The appointee will present the results in conferences, publish in scientific journals, and engage with a highly interdisciplinary, multicenter scientific staff.

    Qualifications

    Applicants should have a recent PhD in atmospheric science, or a related field. Strong background in carbon science, atmospheric inverse modeling, data assimilation, and atmospheric modeling is preferred. Excellent communication and writing skills are highly desirable. Candidates who have received their PhD within the past five years since the date of their application are eligible. Postdoctoral Scholar positions are awarded for a minimum of one-year period and may be renewed up to a maximum duration of three years.
